A.B.C. Green Train

In 1990  Garry Andrews  was commissioned mural artist / designer for the historical A.B.C. Greentrain. A major project, the mural covering 15 carriages and  measuring approximately 200metres in length, (400 square metres in area), was completed in eight weeks.

The Green Train included numerous corporate and public sector educational and promotional exhibits concerning the Environment and toured Queensland, from Cairns to Brisbane. It was seen by thousands of country and city dwellers alike. Historically the Green Train train launched the first National Television broadcast from a moving train.

Cairns connection

After returning to live in North Queensland Andrews was commissioned to design and produce a series of six large murals for The Conservatory, Cairns. These murals celebrated the Natural features of the tropical north.

The natural beauty of tropical rainforest and the marine environment, framing cultural  motifs from Laura region Aboriginal rock art  became the subject of a large mural  (8 metres wide) commissioned for the International Terminal at Cairns Airport in 1992.

Monsoon was the theme of Andrews' next mural, this time a painting (8 metres wide) related to the venue which was Cairns Pacific International Hotel's new "Monsoon Restaurant".

Cairns Regional Gallery mural.

Speaking of monsoons, Andrews' next project generated a storm of controversy. "Icon and Innovation" was the title of the mural project for Cairns Regional Gallery in 1995. This project received unprecedented international media coverage over perceived issues of censorship. More info- "The David Story".

The project brought together the skills of many artists including Julie Furze, Sharmilla Nezovic- (workshop co-facilitator), as the mural included a community schools murals aspect which enlisted the talents of school students from ten high schools throughout the north. The project was supported by The Tanks Arts Centre, Graft'nArts Cairns and excellent photo documentation by David Campbell.

Reef And Rainforest Mural , Cardwell

The spectacular vista of Hinchinbrook Island, which featured in an earlier series of paintings by Andrews, becomes a central motif in a series of interpretive and educational murals, in area totalling approximately 154 square metres. This project was produced by the artist circa 1998 for the Dept. of Environment, Reef and Rainforest Centre located adjacent to Hinchinbrook Island at Cardwell in North Queensland. Garry was the principal artist for this project which integrated artistic skills of several artists including James Baines, Ben Trupperbaumer and Scott Maxwell.

Chermside Library Mural.

The talents and enthusiasm of Staff and Students from the Sandgate High School were harnessed in the creation of a mural celebrating the launch of the new Chermside (B.C.C.) Library in 1997.The mural focussed on the illuminatory capacity of libraries and emergent digital technologies, linked to global and locally relevant images generated by the Sandgate High School students through a workshop process.

Garry Andrews is available to design and create commissioned murals and to work with secondary students/schools on collaborative community projects. He is also available to undertake Artist in Residence or workshop facilitation in Painting, Drawing and Photography.
