The David Story By Jasmine Isis.

In 1995 Garry Andrews was commissioned by the Cairns Regional Gallery to design and produce a mural for the Gallery's exterior construction hoardings (approximately 60 metres long), whilst the building was being refurbished.

This mural, which incorporated a school's murals project involving 70 regional schoolchildren, gained "unprecedented" national and international media attention after the artist painted a pair of speedo swimming togs onto the David figure, at the request of the Gallery. The project became the centre of a controversy over issues of censorship. The picture (left) was taken by the artist prior to the "cover up".

The story made front page news for the Courier Mail newspaper two days  in succession, was covered by the A.B.C. 7.30 Report current affairs program and Commercial Television Networks in Australia. The story was also extensively covered by international media.
